DUBLIN PORTS €1.1 BILLION EXPANSION PLAN UNDER SCRUTINY
Dublin Port is the busiest Irish Port. It currently handles 35 million tonnes of goods every year and wants to expand its capacity to 77 million tonnes by 2040. The port successfully managed to increase the number of berths and is working on the development of a new jetty. The expansion phase will conclude with the creation of more roll-on, roll-off capacity, extra space for container ships to load and unload as well as the creation of a large container and trailer park. Also, part of the expansion plan is the development of a ‘Maritime Village’ which will replace rowing, sailing and boat club facilities to make way for an access road as well as a 7 km cycle path alongside a few hectares of parkland.
The statement of the minister was received with mixed feelings across the spectrum. According to him, the ‘Area O’, a 13 acre site proposed for container and trailer storage should be diverted for a nature reserve and a 10 acre site at the East Wall, currently being used for storage of newly imported cars should be handed over for development of housing projects.
The Minister suggested that Dublin Port should consider developing and shifting the load onto rail freight, rather than continuing movement of goods by truck.
M50 or Motorway 50 is one of the busiest artery roads of the city. It is choked to the neck during peak hours.
